Cabling is the part of your IT that nobody sees — until it causes problems. Because it is built into walls and ceilings and expected to last many years, choosing the right type matters. Here is a simple comparison of the three options most offices consider.
Cat6
Cat6 is a common choice for office desk points. It supports gigabit speeds comfortably and can carry 10 Gbps over shorter distances. It is cost-effective and suitable for most everyday workloads.
Cat6A
Cat6A supports 10 Gbps over the full standard copper channel length and offers better protection against interference. It is a good fit for access points, high-traffic areas and offices that want more headroom for the future. It is thicker and costs more than Cat6, so pathways and containment need to be planned for it.
Fibre optic
Fibre is used for backbones — linking floors, buildings or racks — and for long distances where copper is not suitable. It carries very high speeds, is immune to electrical interference and is the foundation of a scalable network.
Quick comparison
- Everyday desk points: Cat6 is usually sufficient.
- Wi-Fi access points and future-proofing: Cat6A is worth considering.
- Between floors, racks or buildings: fibre.
Do not forget the rest of the system
Good cabling is more than the cable itself. Quality patch panels, proper labelling, neat rack and cable management and testing every link after installation all make a big difference to reliability and future maintenance.
Our recommendation
Many offices use a mix: Cat6 or Cat6A to the desks and access points, with a fibre backbone between racks or floors. The right design depends on your layout, growth plans and budget. Learn more about our structured cabling services and network infrastructure.
